What is Gray
Gray is a native phone app (iPhone and Android) paired with a small server you run yourself — your “box.” You talk; Gray works on your box and your servers; anything risky waits for your approval.
The model
Section titled “The model”Self-host only. There is no hosted Gray. The app connects to a box you own — a VPS, a home server, a spare machine. Your conversations, files, and keys stay on that box.
Bring your own models. Gray detects what’s already on your box and uses it. The scan looks for agent CLIs (Claude Code, Codex, Grok, Gemini, Aider, OpenCode, Cursor), model logins (Anthropic/Claude, OpenAI, xAI/Grok, Gemini), and the runtime basics (python3, node, docker, tmux, git, rg) — and shows you only what it found. You never paste an API key into the app.
One requirement inside that: Gray’s own voice — the Talk surface — runs on Claude, so the box needs a signed-in Claude CLI or an Anthropic key. The other CLIs are agents Gray’s crew can drive for you; they don’t power Gray’s voice. Details: Models & keys.
Everything is included. Gray doesn’t gate features — what your plan sets is how much can run at once. Plan details live in the app.
The four tabs
Section titled “The four tabs”- Talk — the hub. Voice or text in; a live feed of parallel agent lanes out; approvals inline. Using Talk
- Servers — every box you manage: health, terminals, pairing, disconnect. Using Servers
- Activity — the searchable record of everything that happened: chats, runs, jobs, alerts with one-tap triage. Using Activity
- Me — account, plan, app lock, voice speed, skills, notifications, feedback. Me & settings
What Gray is not
Section titled “What Gray is not”- Not a chatbot subscription — there are no per-token charges from Gray; model usage runs on your own accounts.
- Not an unattended automation tool — consequential actions stop at an approval gate.
- Not a data platform — see How Gray handles your data: the only things that ever leave your box are brokered premium voice audio and Apple purchase receipts.
