Install
Gray is two pieces: the app (iPhone and Android) and the box (your self-hosted server). The app is a remote control — it needs a box to talk to.
1. Get the app
Section titled “1. Get the app”Gray for iPhone and Android — on the App Store and Google Play at launch.
2. Have a box ready
Section titled “2. Have a box ready”Any Linux machine you can SSH into works — a $5 VPS, a home server, a spare laptop. It needs:
- Linux with Python 3.11+ (the installer handles dependencies)
- Tailscale — how your phone reaches the box privately
- Claude on the box — required. Gray’s voice runs on Claude: run
claudeonce on the box and sign in (subscription works), or setANTHROPIC_API_KEY. - Any other model logins you already use (Codex/OpenAI, Grok/xAI, Gemini…) — detected automatically; Gray’s crew can drive those CLIs. They don’t power Gray’s own voice — see Models & keys
Set it up in about five minutes: Set up your box.
3. Sign in and connect
Section titled “3. Sign in and connect”Onboarding runs account-first: create your account (email and a 6-digit code), then connect the box with the address and box code its installer printed, then Gray scans it and shows what it found. The details: Sign in.
What it costs to try
Section titled “What it costs to try”Nothing beyond your own box — download the app, connect, and use it. Plan options live in the app.
